GORDON VALES

ImageChef.com - Create custom images

I'm a sucker for a good story.

When a GREAT story comes along I am giddy. Gordon Vales is that story. With simple wisdom and as Utah Phillips says in his song about Gordon, simple talk.

There he was last year with Sir Richard Branson and Paul Allen enjoying the joys of simple flight at Oshkosh, Wisconsin. A couple of months ago, Gordon and I were in Seattle attending SeaFair also celebrating one of Gordon's interests in all things that fly including Superheros.

I have been shooting video and audio of Gordon for some time and hope to share this effort to capture a true spirit in action at some point in the future. If you have a story about Gordon please share it. If you know or knew Gordon please let me know.

FABULOUS LAS VEGAS

I lived there once.

Conducting classes from the guy who conducted the DUNES HOTEL ORCHESTRA for the big time showbiz activities there.

Television production at the studio on the UNLV campus which did a microwave link show between the two nursing schools.

A couple of years ago I was part of a group that launched a Segway Human Transporter enterprise at the Fashion Show Mall plaza next to the Strip. When that ended I had a couple of Segways left. I finally sold them. Here is the last one as shown on eBay recently.

GHOST HOUSE

During the "HOLOGRAM PERIOD" I tried twice to create a "Holographic Ghost House". The first time was after "The World of Sid and Marty Kroft" attraction at the OMNI near the World Congress Center in Atlanta, Georgia was removed. This space seemed ideal for the concept and I was able to negotiate a "letter of intent" from the facility. Unfortunately the "letter" was not leading to anything but good intentions and the Ghost House concept was delayed.

Over at Six Flags Over Georgia there was an actual Ghost House already in existence but in need of some new ideas. I gave them a few and a couple of them "eerily similar" to my proposal did make it into the lineup for the next years efforts but alas not from McMahon Productions taking the lead or credit. It was however a project that "lifted my spirits". Here is a concept photo from these projects.

HOUSE OF WAX

The House of Wax Project

I attended a showing of a family film series at the Fabulous Fox Theatre in Atlanta, Georgia. I was excited by how many people were in this 4000 seat facility enthusiastically viewing the selected films.

Then it struck me. How about combining a hologram show exhibit with a showing of the original 3D House of Wax movie!

Now what? There needed to be a silver screen. The Fox said they would not be purchasing one but if I wanted to paint theirs I could and then keep it afterwards. I hired people from the midwest to come down and paint the screen. They did and when the show was over and we attempted to roll up the very heavy screen it tore apart. YIKES! Seeing the success of this 3D presentation the Fox management immediately purchased a brand new silver screen instead of a simple replacement that was already in the works. Oh if only they had seen the light a bit earlier!

I produced a 10 second TV spot showing a fellow plucking out a movie audience member and bringing them through the screen. The announcer simply said, "Halloween, Holograms and House of Wax at The Fox".

Along with radio and newspaper ads and 10,000 bookmarks the campaign was very effective. We had around 10,000 people there during the three day run. Vincent Price reportedly expressed his disappointment that he was not there. That was my main frustration also but I had no realistic expectation that this event would be so well attended.

Three days to go and with my finances exhausted I was informed that I would need a one milliion dollar liability policy which was going to cost me around $5000.

No problem, said the Fox management, "We can take over the project.". THAT just wasn't acceptable to me. After all the work that went into this I needed to pull this off and luckily the show went on as scheduled by McMahon Productions. A couple of Acts cancelled allowing me to have a three day run. One of them was Santana. I also had the pleasure of meeting Alex Cooley who produced The Rolling Stones shows in Atlanta.

Here is a bit of nostalgia surrounding this event.

Holos Gramma

The whole message is what it is all about in the world of holography. My early adventures in the creation of integrams or multiplex holography began in San Francisco, California and led to some interesting projects in Georgia and elsewhere.

Holoexhibit

This was a display of my holograms at a shopping mall in Macon, Georgia.

The light source an ordinary light bulb packaged with some rather large flat sheets of cardboard with cutouts. The display was used in a Citizens and Southern Bank promotion of around 100 holograms around the state with a glossy black color.

Other concepts are shown here.
